White House Fights Obesity

First Lady Michelle Obama has officially launched the "Let's Move" initiative to fight childhood obesity. The campaign aims to help parents make healthy choices for their family, serve quality food in schools, improve access and affordability of healthy foods, and increase physical activity for kids. Several childhood obesity non-profits and foundations have formed Partnership for a Healthier America to address this growing problem among American youths.

Activity Ideas - Math

Tell your child that national guidelines recommend 150 minutes of physical activity each week for elementary school children. 

  • How many hours is 150 minutes? 2-1/2 hours (150 minutes ÷ 60 minutes =  2.5 or 2-1/2 hours)
  • Jenny plays soccer. She gets 150 minutes of activity after two days of practice. How long is each soccer practice? 75 minutes (150 minutes ÷ 2 days = 75 minutes)
  • If Jenny has practice every day but Saturday and Sunday, how much physical activity does she get in one week? 375 minutes (75 minutes x 5 days = 375 minutes). How many hours is that? 6.25 hours (375 minutes ÷ 60 minutes = 6.25 hours)
  • Convert decimal - .25 hours - into fraction: (0.25 = 25/100). Simplify fraction by dividing top and bottom by highest number that can divide both numbers exactly: 1/4 (25 ÷ 25 = 1) (100 ÷ 25 = 4). Jenny practices 6 1/4 hours every week.

Let the 2010 Winter Games begin! Elite athletes from more than 80 countries are vying for Olympic Gold. Vancouver, Canada, hosts 17 days of thrills, chills—and likely some spills—in skeleton, snowboarding, alpine skiing, figure skating, speed skating, luge and other events.

The Canadian Olympic School Program identifies the following as important Olympic Values.

As you watch the Olympic Games, encourage your child to identify a performance, athlete, or event that is the embodiment of each word, with a clear explanation for why he or she thinks so. For example: 
Fun - Even though Shaun White is competing for the gold, he makes it seem like he is out there to have fun, and that a medal would be a bonus. He smiles at the camera, has said that he creates playlists that get him pumped up, wears brightly colored and patterned gear....

 

EXTRA: Encourage your child to do a Podcast Feature on an Olympic athlete or event that he or she thought was an embodiment of at least two of these values. He or she will want to provide background information on the athlete/event, identify each value, and describe the behavior(s) or moment(s) that represent the values.

Overall, at least 50 million Americans shivered, shoveled and struggled through the storms' freezing temperatures, strong winds and intimidating piles of snow.

Percents

Calculate the percentage difference between the cumulative snowfall this season (through February 10, 4 p.m.) and last, based on the following estimates.

 

Washington, D.C.

2009-2010: 57 inches

2008-2009: 3 inches
1,800% increase in cumulative snowfall from last year
(57 inches - 3 inches = 54 inches) (54 inches ÷ 3 inch difference = 18) (18 x 100% = 1800% increase)

Baltimore

2009-2010: 77 inches

2008-2009: 4 inches
1,825% increase

(77 inches - 4 inches = 73 inches) (73 inches ÷ 4 inch difference= 18.25) (18.25 x 100% = 1825% increase)

Philadelphia

09-10: 66 inches

08-09: 15 inches
340% increase

(66 inches - 15 inches  = 51 inches) (51 inches ÷ 15 = 3.4) (3.4  x 100% = 340% increase)

New York City

09-10: 22 inches

08-09: 20 inches
10% increase

(22 inches - 20 inches = 2 inches) (2 inches ÷ 20 inches = 0.1) (0.1 x 100 % = 10% increase)

Boston

09-10: 28 inches

08-09: 54 inches
48% decrease

(28 inches - 54 inches = -26 inches) (-26 inches ÷  54 inches  = -0.48) (-.048  x 100 = 48% decrease)
