Learning Tips

Dr Seuss books are a wonderful resource when practice the skill of rhyming. Children find these books fun and engaging. After reading each page, have your child identify a pair of rhyming words. Ask them why the words rhyme. Discuss how rhyming words have the same endings.

Rhyme Game: You can play this game anywhere, anytime. One person starts the game by saying “Rhyme Time!” Next, one person will say a word and the other person will need to respond with a word that rhymes. Continue taking turns with different words and see how many pairs you can make.

Pointing out rhyming words in stories and books is another great way to reinforce this skill.

Bath tub crayons: At your local toy store you can pick up a box of “bath tub crayons.” These special crayons are designed to be used in the bathtub and rinse away easily with water. When your child is taking a bath, have them practice writing as many rhyming words as they can.

Write own rhyming story together. Another great activity would be to write a rhyming story together. This can be an excellent language and writing opportunity for you and your child to share.
