Volume in Cubic Units
Understand the concept of volume and use the appropriate units in common measuring systems (i.e., cubic centimeter [cm3], cubic meter [m3], cubic inch [in3], cubic yard [yd3]) to compute the volume of rectangular solids.
The ability to find the volume of a rectangular solid and accurately find the unit of measure used.

Learning Tips

(1)

Math Vocabulary:

Volume: The amount of space that a three-dimensional figure contains. Volume is usually expressed in cubic units

Formula: Volume= length x width x height (l x w x h )

Variable: a symbol used to represent an unknown number

(2)

To find the volume of a rectangular prism, your child needs to memorize the formula for volume and the positions of each.

Formula = length x width x height

= l x w x h

height

width

length

(3)

When finding the volume your child must substitute the given values for the length, width, and height and then multiply all 3 numbers together to get the volume Example:

V= l x w x h v= (4 x 2) x 5 v= (8)x5

V= 40 cm3

5cm

2cm

4cm

(4)

When working with areas and formulas it is very important that your child writes the formula down every time they do a problem. This will make it easier for them to memorize the formula. If your child does not memorize the formula for volume , they will not be successful with this standard.

(5)

To find the missing dimension, use the formula for volume.

Step 1. Substitute the known values in the formula.

V= l x w x h

165 cm 3 = (11cm x 5 cm) x h

Step 2: Multiply

165 cm3 = (55 cm 2 ) x h

V=165cm 2

Step 3: Mental Math

Think 55 times what number

Equals 165? ?

If your child is not sure, he or

she can divide 165 by 55. ?

Therefore the missing height is 3

5 cm

11cm

H=3
