Learning Tips

(1)

Following oral directions can be quite simple but the student needs to remain focused. Start off by playing a few listening games. One of the most popular ones is Simon Says. Start by giving your student simple single step directions.

Ex. Simon Says “touch your nose”.

Simon Says “touch your knees”.

After giving your student single step instructions, move onto two step instructions.

Ex. Simon Says “Clap your hands twice then touch your nose”.

Practice a few of these commands.

(2)

After playing Simon Says you can have your child work on paper. Begin by asking you child to write some things on the paper.

Ex. “Draw a circle in the middle of the paper.” Have your student listen to the complete instructions before performing the task.

Have your child listen to one step oral instructions and perform the written task.

Now have your child work on listening to two oral instructions before performing the task.

Ex. “Draw a triangle in the middle of the paper. Color it green.”

Have your child listen to both instructions before performing the task.

Practice giving your child two directions before having them perform the required tasks.
