Learning Tips

Read a familiar fairytale with your child:

Cinderella, Snow White, Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, Sleeping Beauty etc.,

As you read the story ask your child about what you have just read.

Start off by asking one question per sentence.

Ex. Once upon a time, long, long ago there lived a king.

When did the story happen?” If your child is having a problem, prompt them with some ideas: yesterday, last week or a long long time ago? Have your child answer in complete sentences.

After your child gets comfortable answering questions,

Go through few sentences before asking a question about what they just read. Focus on the main character and the main idea of the paragraph.

Ex. Goldilocks was feeling hungry. She went over to the bowls of porridge and began eating Papa Bear’s porridge……..This porridge is just right.

Why did Goldilocks try all three bowls of porridge?”

After reading the story, try retelling the story to your child. Start the story off correctly but as you continue, make some mistake. See if your child catches the mistakes. If your child does, then have him/her continue telling the story. If s/he makes a mistake, guide them back on track.

If your child does not catch the mistakes you have made I telling the story, ask him/her a question about the story.

Ex. Goldilocks thought Papa Bear’s chair was just right. Is that right?

If your child still does not catch the mistake, go back to that part of the story.

Go over the pictures in the story. Point out what part of the story each picture represents. Pick two pictures out of the book and askBeneath it have two sentences to choose from your child which one came first in the story.
