Track Letters
Be able to identify the letters that are found in a word and name them. Make the sound that goes with that letter found in the word. Know what sound is heard first or last in a word.

Sample Problems

(1)

What letter makes the “k” sound? Both c and k are acceptable answers.

(2)

What sound does the “b” make?

(3)

In the word cat, what is the first sound you hear?

(4)

What is the last sound in the word dog?

(5)

How many times do you hear the “s” sound in the word snakes?

Learning Tips

(1)

Have individual upper and lowercase letters written on index cards or preprinted flashcards. Hold up a card and have your child tell you the sound associated with the card. After a few times, time each other and see who is faster. Make a few mistakes along the way and have your child help you. For the vowels, focus on the short sounds and make certain to explain that it is the short vowel sound.

(2)

Hold the flashcards facing away from your child. Look at the first card and make the sound that goes along with the letter. Ask your child to name the letter that makes the sound they just heard. If they answer correctly put it in one pile. If they answer incorrectly put it in a separate pile. Go back to the incorrect stack. Review these cards again. Once your child correctly answers your questions, mix all the cards together again and repeat the exercise.
