Word sounds
Track auditorily each word in a sentence and each syllable in a word.
Be able to distinguish individual words that make up a sentence. Identify the how many syllables are found in a word. Recognize that there are usually more syllables than words in a sentence.
 

Sample Problems

(1)

How many words are in the following sentence: The school bell is ringing.

(2)

How many syllables are in the following sentence: The school bell is ringing.

Learning Tips

(1)

Practice breaking up a word into its syllables. Clap out the syllables that you hear. Review what a word is. Explain the difference between a syllable and a word. A word has a meaning whereas a syllable is part of a word and does not carry a meaning in and of itself.

Say a funny simple sentence out loud, “See the giraffe flying?” Ask your child to tell you how many words that they heard. Repeat the sentence again. Write the sentence down and count out the words. Did you child get the same number?

Now count out the syllables in the sentence. You’ll notice that there are more syllables than words. This is usually the case. Explain to your child that some words are made up of more than one syllable. Both the words giraffe and flying have two syllables and so that is why there are more syllable than words.

(4)

Now use a book to practice counting words and syllables. The book should be one that has been read before so that your child is familiar with the words and can distinguish them quite easily.

Extra Help Problems

(1)

Have a worksheet with words on the left hand side and answer choices on the right. Parents will help their kids with the words they do not know how to read. The student will then circle whether it is a one syllable, two syllable, or three syllable word.

Have one worksheet with simple sentence. Parents will read a sentence out loud and then give their child two words to choose from. The student will be asked which of these two words did they hear first.
