Counting syllables
Count the number of sounds in syllables and syllables in words
Sound out a word and break it up into its syllables. Count how many distinct syllables make up the word. Sound out the syllables and identify the letters heard in the syllable. Count out the number of individual sounds heard in the syllable.

Sample Problems

(1)

How many syllables do you hear in the word “understand”?

(2)

In the syllable “ast” how many sounds do you hear?

Learning Tips

(1)

Practice sounding out words into its syllables. Use an easy storybook so that the words are not too difficult to comprehend. Clap out the syllables that are heard in the words. Count the number of syllables that are heard in the word. Then repeat each syllable slowly and see if your child hears the different sounds in the syllable. Practice sounding out the syllables.

(2)

Each syllable can be broken down into individual sounds. The sounds heard are produced by letters (both consonants and vowels). Ex. ag Two sounds can be heard “a” and “g”.

(3)

The digraph blends will only produce one. Remind your child of the digraphs. Explain to them that to produce the sound there needs to be two letters (th-thumb ph- phone, wh- whisper, ch- chimp, sh- ship).

(4)

Long vowel syllables will contain two vowels but only the first vowel sound will be heard: ex. ane – only the long a sound and the n are heard.
