Letter and Word Sounds
Blend sounds to make syllables
Blend vowel-consonant sounds to make words or syllables
Be able to sound out all the consonant and vowel sounds. Differentiate between a consonant and a vowel. Blend sounds together to produce syllables. Clap out syllables. Identify letters that produce the blended sound.

Sample Problems

(1)

Name all 5 vowels and make their short sounds.

(2)

What two letters make the word “am”?

(3)

Blend the letters “i” and “t”. What word do these letters make?

Learning Tips

(1)

Review all the alphabet letter sounds.

(2)

To begin blending start with the “a” vowel. Practice saying the short “a” sound. Select a consonant to follow the vowel: ex. a b. To blend, stretch the “a” sound and then add the “b” sound without pausing. Practice with other consonant letters. All of these blends are syllables. After bringing the two letters together to produce the new sound, try to make read the blend the way it should sound (not stretched). Point out that the blend can be said in one clap. This is an example of a syllable.

(3)

Follow the same directions as in tip number two but do it with the rest of the vowels. Although some blends sound like nonsense, they may be put together with other letters to create real words: ex. “et”- let, pet, wet….

Extra Help Problems

(1)

Short “a” worksheet. Place the lower case letter a at the top of the page inside a box. Beneath it have all the consonant letters. The student will be asked to combine the “a” with each consonant letter: ex. 1) a-b= ab 2) a-c= ac

This next worksheet can have 5 blends of each vowel:

Ex. _ab, _ag, _am, _an, _at. Ask the student to place a consonant before the blend to produce a real word: cab, bag, ham, pan, mat. Parents are encouraged to help blend sounds and guide their child to make words.
