Math Vocabulary

Two-dimensional- measured in two directions, such as length and width

Three- dimensional- measured in three directions, such as length width and height.

Figure- shape or object

Face- a polygon that is a flat surface of a solid figure (square, triangle, or rectangle).

Edge- the line made where two or more faces of a solid figure meet.

Vertex- the point where three or more sides meet in a solid figure (the corners of the shape).

Net- a two-dimensional pattern of a three-dimensional figure formed by faces of the figure.

Make Nets

Use the internet to find nets for various figures (or use old boxes around the house and cut them flat). Have your child cut out the nets and tape them together in order to make a three-dimensional figure. This activity will allow the child to understand the concept of choosing the net that best represents the three- dimensional figure.

Chart the shapes w/ picture, faces, vertices, and edges. Have your child practice identifying figures by referring to the chart. You can place the description on a card and the name of the figure on a card and match them as a game (like concentration or Go Fish).

Locate different objects in your home or cut out pictures in a magazine and have them identify the type of figure or name the faces that make the figure.

Color Code

Color code the three dimensional figures in order to accurately count the vertices and edges on a figure. For example, on a cube outline the edges in 12 different colors so they won’t miscalculate and make points on the vertices in 8 different colors. This will help your child understand how to maintain accuracy in an organized way.
