 (1) Types of lines Line- a straight path of points that is endless in both directions. It has no endpoints. Drawing: W KL rite it : Line Segment- part of a line. It has two endpoint Drawing: Write it: Ray- Part of a line. It has one endpoint and is endless in the other direction. Drawing: Write it: (2) Line relationships Intersecting lines- lines that cross each other Perpendicular lines- lines that intersect to form four right angles Parallel lines- lines in a figure that never intersect, but are across from one another (3) Identify Lines in Pictures Cut out various pictures from magazines, newspapers, etc. and have the child identify line relationships that they see in the item. (For example, lined notebook paper has parallel lines or opened scissors has intersecting lines). They can move the pictures on a categorizing chart for the types of lines and paste them in the correct category. (4) Draw lines Allow child to draw lines on paper and label them. Let them explore and have fun! Materials: construction paper, ruler, markers, pencils, crayons (5) Make a connection with lines and maps Look at a map (www.googlemaps.com ; type in directions of 2 local locations; see map of streets). Ask your child about the different streets: Are (name streets) parallel? Find two streets that are perpendicular? How many streets have intersecting lines?
