Rhombus, Squares and Quadrilaterals
Know the definition of different quadrilaterals (i.e. rhombus, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid).
Identify, classify and draw different quadrilaterals (i.e. rhombus, square, rectangle, parallelogram and trapezoid). Know the parallel sides, congruent sides, and angles.

Sample Problems

(1)

Identify the figure (Name, parallelogram, quadrilateral): ____________

(Trapezoid, quadrilateral)

(2)

Identify the figure: _______________

(Rhombus, parallelogram, quadrilateral)

(3)

Classify the figure: _________________

(General Quadrilateral)

(4)

Which figure does not belong:

A) B) C)

(B, it does not have right angles)

(5)

Identify the figure: ______________

It has 2 pairs of parallel sides

4 congruent sides

4 right angles

(square)

Learning Tips

(1)

Math Vocabulary

General quadrilateral- a figure with four sides, but no pairs of sides are parallel

Parallelogram- a figure with two pairs of parallel sides (square, rectangle, rhombus and trapezoid)

Trapezoid- one pair of parallel sides

Rhombus- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides and 4 congruent sides

Rectangle- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides; opposite sides are congruent; 4 right angles

Square- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides; 4 congruent sides; and 4 right angles.

(2)

Make quadrilaterals with toothpicks

Provide the child with a list of different quadrilaterals and examples. Have them make the shapes by pasting toothpicks on construction paper. After they have made the quadrilaterals, using the examples have them practice making them with descriptions only (no examples of figures).

(3)

Categorize and Sort Quadrilaterals

Make boxes on large construction paper with headings (2 pairs of parallel sides; Right angles; Parallel sides; Parallelogram, etc.) Cut out shapes of different quadrilaterals. Have your child place the quadrilaterals under the correct heading.

(4)

Make a chart

Make a chart that your child can refer to in order to grasp the classification of each quadrilateral.

For example:

Name

Congruent Sides

Parallel Sides

Angles

General quadrilateral

0 equal sides

0 parallel sides

Various angles

Trapezoid

0-2 equal sides (vary)

1 pair

Various angles

Parallelogram

Opposite sides congruent

2 pairs

Various angles

Rectangles

Opposite sides congruent

2 pairs

4 right angles

Rhombus

4 sides

2 pairs

Various angles

Square

4 sides

2 pairs

4 right angles

(5)

Review- Lines & Angles

Acute angle- an angle that has a measure less than 90°

Obtuse angle- an angle that has a measure greater than 90°, but less than a straight angle at 180°

Right angle- an angle that forms a straight corner and measures at 90°

Identify quadrilaterals with different types of angles.
