Math Vocabulary

General quadrilateral- a figure with four sides, but no pairs of sides are parallel

Parallelogram- a figure with two pairs of parallel sides (square, rectangle, rhombus and trapezoid)

Trapezoid- one pair of parallel sides

Rhombus- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides and 4 congruent sides

Rectangle- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides; opposite sides are congruent; 4 right angles

Square- a parallelogram with 2 pairs of parallel sides; 4 congruent sides; and 4 right angles.

Provide the child with a list of different quadrilaterals and examples. Have them make the shapes by pasting toothpicks on construction paper. After they have made the quadrilaterals, using the examples have them practice making them with descriptions only (no examples of figures).

Make boxes on large construction paper with headings (2 pairs of parallel sides; Right angles; Parallel sides; Parallelogram, etc.) Cut out shapes of different quadrilaterals. Have your child place the quadrilaterals under the correct heading.

Make a chart that your child can refer to in order to grasp the classification of each quadrilateral.

Acute angle- an angle that has a measure less than 90°

Obtuse angle- an angle that has a measure greater than 90°, but less than a straight angle at 180°

Right angle- an angle that forms a straight corner and measures at 90°
