Sample Problems

(1)

Which equations are equal:

  1. 5 + 10 + 7 = 9 + 6 + 7

  2. 6 + 11 + 8 = 5 + 9 + 8

  3. 2 + 4 + 5 = 6 +1 + 5

(a)

(2)

(Change 3 to 4)

(4)

Which equation is not equal to 16:

  1. 6 + 3 + 7 = 5 + 4 + 7

  2. 7 + 3 + 6 = 7 + 3 + 4 + 2

  3. 4 + 6 + 7 = 8 + 2 + 7

(c)

(5)

Is the equation true? Write yes or no.

3 dimes + 4 pennies = 1 quarter ______

(no)

Learning Tips

(1)

Review the value of money (quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies, half dollars, silver dollars).

Divide paper into two parts and use real coins to make both sides equal.

(2)

Use a balancing scale to make both sides equal, using objects and shapes.

For example, 3 yellow squares = 1 red rectangle. Place it in the scale to see if it balances. (see image below)

(3)

Review comparing numbers (greater than, less than, and equal to)

Write down some addition problems and have your child compare the sums, using <, >, or =.

i.e.) 2 + 5 O 3 + 4

(4)

Use an image of a scale in the beginning so the child will have a visual of trying to balance the problems: _____ | _____

(5)

Practice simple addition facts, using flash cards, timed practice, card games, etc. This will remind the child how simple the problems can be as long as they know their addition facts.
