Learning Tips

(1)

To help your child follow written directions, first begin by reading the directions with your child. Remind your child to read the entire set of directions all the way through. Encourage your child to then reread the first direction(s). Your child may want to complete the first direction and cross it off before moving to the next direction. This allows children to mentally see what has been completed and what still needs to be completed.

(2)

Remind your child that after reading the entire set of directions, to think about what he/she must do. Tell your child that directions need to be followed from top to bottom and that steps cannot be skipped. Have your child think of baking a cake. If a step was taken out of a recipe, such as “add 1 cup of sugar”. The cake would not come out correct. This goes for the end product in any set of directions.

(3)

Remember to reward your child through praise and encouragement. Children often have trouble when beginning to read and follow written instructions on their own. Encourage your child to do their best and to ask any questions pertaining to directions that they do not understand. Make your child feel good by giving words of praise for completing instructions at different times.

(4)

Remember to practice the concept of following directions with your child. If a child wants to become a better reader, they read as much as possible. The same goes for the skill of following written directions. Make it into a game. Write down two-step directions on a piece of paper. Have your child read the directions carefully and see how well they can be completed. As your child becomes better at the skill, add on more directions.

(5)

An activity that can easily be done at home that reinforces the skill of following directions is cooking with your child. Find kid friendly recipes that can be used to make fun snacks or items. Have your child read over the entire set of directions before beginning anything. Remind your child that this is important when completing anything. Remind your child that if the directions are not followed correctly, the end product will not come out right. Other activities may consist of building objects or completing a short science experiment.
