Learning Tips

(1)

A title may be used before a person’s name. A title begins with a capital letter and usually ends with a period. To help your child better understand the concept of abbreviations for titles of people, encourage your child to write a friendly letter to someone where a title would be used before a person’s name (ex. Miss, Ms., Mrs., Mr., Dr.). Let your child know that we use titles, such as those listed above, to be respectful to adults.

(2)

Miss” is the only title before a person’s name that does not end with a period. Although times have changed and many people us Ms., Mrs., and Miss whenever. An easy way to remember that Miss is written without the period is to inform your child that the title Miss is usually used with younger women before they get married. Remember, this not married, no period.

(3)

Have your child make a list of the months of the year. Tell them the first three letters of each month make up the abbreviation. For example, January = Jan. The abbreviation for each month always starts with a capital letter and ends with a period. Encourage your child to write the abbreviation for each month listed. Remind your child that the only month that is never abbreviated is the month of May because it only has three letters in the name.

(4)

To help your child remember the abbreviations for the days of the week, play a game a memory with him/her. Write the full names of the days of the week on note cards. One card for each day of the week. Then, write the abbreviations for the days of the week on note cards. Turn all of the cards face down. Have your child turn over two cards. If the card is a match, he/she can take the pair of cards and then take another turn. If the cards are not a match, the player must turn the two cards back over and the next player gets a turn. The player at the end with the most matches is the winner.

(5)

The abbreviations for the days of the week all start with a capital letter and end with a period. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday’s abbreviations are all the first three letters of that day and a period. Tuesday and Thursday are the two days that use 4 and 5 letters in the abbreviations. Tuesday = Tues. and Thursday = Thurs.

Now I am getting ready to go back to school. My first day back is tomorrow and my new teacher is miss Smith. I will have to let you know how it goes.

Your friend,
