Learning Tips

(1)

Remind your child that some nouns name special people, animals, places, or things. These nouns are called special nouns or proper nouns.

(2)

Have your child write a list of nouns. Nouns are people, places, things, or animals. Now ask your child to write a specific or special noun for each noun listed. Example: girl – Amanda. The special noun names a specific person, place, thing, or animal. These special/proper nouns begin with a capital letter.

(3)

With your child list the names of months in order. Make sure that every month begins with a capital letter. To help your child better understand the months of the year, give him/her twelve pieces of construction paper. Encourage your child to use one piece of construction paper per month. Have him/her write the month at the top of the construction paper and then illustrate a picture to go with that month. For example, for the month of February your child might draw pink and red hearts to symbolize Valentine’s Day. Have your child complete a picture for each month and then connect the papers together as a book. This way he/she can have a keepsake to look back on.

(4)

To help your child better understand the days of the week, have him/her list each day in order on writing paper. Explain to your child that the two days that start with the letter “s” is known as the weekend. All of the other days are known as weekdays. Remind your child to start each day with a capital letter.

(5)

Have your child write a few sentences about something that he/she likes. The first word in each sentence (telling, question, command, and exclamatory) must begin with a capital letter. Encourage your child to share with you their writing. For those children who really enjoy writing, allow them to pick out a journal or diary that can be kept with them. Encouraging your child to set aside time to write will help him/her become a better writer. Remind him/her to proofread their work at the end.
