Learning Tips

To help your child spell frequently irregular words correctly, encourage them to keep a list close to them where writing is usually done. A list of Common High-Frequency Words can be found at the following website: http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonrepro/lessonplans/instructor/spell1.htm#most. This way your child can have the commonly used words handy when writing.

Another idea for helping your child become a better speller is to make a spelling dictionary that your child can keep. Take pieces of writing paper or construction paper and fold them together like a book. At the top of each page write a letter from the alphabet. Have you child record words in the spelling dictionary that he/she may have trouble spelling. As your child is writing and is unable to spell a word, help him/her write the word in the dictionary. Next time your child has trouble spelling that same word; encourage them to look it up in their spelling dictionary.

Building Words – Using the Common High-Frequency Word List (http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonrepro/lessonplans/instructor/spell1.htm#most), have your child build words to practice spelling. Start with smaller words such as “an”, and encourage your child to add on letters to make new words. Children can add the letter “p” to make the word “pan”, the letter “t” to make the word “tan”, the letter “c” to make the word “can” and so on. Have your child make as many words as possible and then begin with a new word.

Using the Trace, Copy, and Recall method will help your child spell many words that he/she is having trouble with. Have your child use a piece of writing paper. Draw two lines going down to create three columns. Have your child label the three columns with the titles “Trace”, “Copy”, and “Recall”. Have your child write four or five frequently misspelled words that he/she is having trouble spelling in the “Trace” column. Then, fold over the “Recall” column so that only the first two columns can be seen. Working with one word at a time, have your child trace over the letters of the first word with his/her finger saying the letters aloud. Next, go to the second column and write the word exactly as it is done in the first column. Having your child say it aloud as he/she writes it. Finally, have your child flip over the paper and write the word from memory in the third column. Encourage your child to practice a small group of words at a time. When your child feels confident, have your child skip completion of the middle column.

Remember that practice make perfect and that includes spelling. Play word games with your child. Choose games such as word searches, crossword puzzles, hangman, and making words (take a big word and see how many words can be made by moving around letters) with your child. Use these games to make spelling fun for your child.
