Learning Tips

(1)

Words that mean the opposite are called antonyms. To help your child better understand antonyms write pairs of opposites on note cards. One word per card. For example, you may write the word “light” on one card and the word “heavy” on another. After making about 14 cards (7 examples of opposites), flip all of the cards face down. Playing the game memory will help your child match the antonyms. Take turns turning over two cards at a time. If the two cards are an example of an antonym, then that player takes the match and gets to try again for another match. If the player does not make a match, then he/she must turn the cards back over and it is the other players turn. The player with the most matches at the end of the game wins.

(2)

Words that mean the same thing or are similar in meaning are called synonyms. Many children become confused when trying to remember the difference between synonyms and antonyms. An easy way to help your child remember this concept is to inform your child that synonyms are words that mean the same. Synonyms and same both start with the letter “s”.

(3)

A thesaurus is a reference book used to find synonyms or words that mean the same. Words are listed in a thesaurus in alphabetical order. To help your child better understand the concept of using a thesaurus, encourage your child to look through one. After doing this, give your child a word to look up. Tell him/her to find three words that are synonyms for the word given. For example, you might have your child look up the word “big”. Your child might look up the word and find the synonyms; huge, humongous, and enormous.

(4)

Have your child say or write down a verb. Once this is done, have your child act out the verb that was said or written down. For example, your child might say “run”. They will then need to act out this action. After acting out the action, have your child act out a word that means the opposite. The child might choose to act out someone who is walking, since the opposite of walk is run. Take turns with your child acting out the opposites.

(5)

To best understand synonyms, point to something in the room that can be described. Have your child think of a word that can describe the item. They may choose the word “hard” to describe a chair. Now have them think of another word that is similar to the word hard. They may come up with the word “rough”.
