Another activity that can be used to teach compound words is to create pictures for each compound word. Have your child write a compound word at the top of a piece of constructions paper. For example, your child might choose to write the word “football”. Have your child separate the compound word into to different words. For example, foot and ball. Have your child draw a picture of a foot and then a ball. Then, have him/her draw a picture of the compound word. By completing this activity, children will be able to see that the two separate words describe something totally different from the compound word itself.
