Learning Tips

(1)

Compound words are single words that are made up from two other words. Usually the two words that are put together to form a compound are one syllable words. For example, the words foot and ball are one syllable words. When these words are put together they create a compound word that means something different from the two separate words.

(2)

To help your child better understand compound words; have them title a piece of construction paper “Compound Words”. Using a newspaper or magazines, have your child cut out as many compound words as he/she can find and glue them onto the construction paper. Have your child read the compound words and tell the two words that make up each new word.

(3)

An activity to help your child understand the concept of compound words is to write various words on note cards. One word per note card. Mix the words up and encourage your child to make as many compound words as possible. As your child creates a compound word, have him/her write it down on a piece of paper. Then, the cards can be put back. Words can be used more than once to create a compound word.

(4)

Have your child brainstorm as many compound words as possible and write them on a piece of construction paper or writing paper. Using a crayon, have him/her draw a line to divide the compound word into two separate words. A timer can also be set while your child completes the activity.

(5)

Another activity that can be used to teach compound words is to create pictures for each compound word. Have your child write a compound word at the top of a piece of constructions paper. For example, your child might choose to write the word “football”. Have your child separate the compound word into to different words. For example, foot and ball. Have your child draw a picture of a foot and then a ball. Then, have him/her draw a picture of the compound word. By completing this activity, children will be able to see that the two separate words describe something totally different from the compound word itself.
