(5)

Learning Tips

(1)

To help your child better understand grouping related ideas; encourage him/her to pick out the ideas first that don’t belong. Have your child ask himself/herself questions such as, “What does not go with the rest?” “What information is not needed?” Have your child cross out the information that does not belong, so that they can focus on the information that is needed.

(2)

Play a game with your child. Think of four different items. Have three of the four items related to each other and one that is not. Children would have to pick the item that does not belong and tell why the item isn’t related. For example, you might say “apples, peas, orange, and watermelon”. Children would guess “peas” because the other three items are types of fruits and peas is an example of a vegetable. Continue this activity with your child allowing him/her to take a turn thinking of related items.

(3)

Encourage your child to write in a daily journal. Give your child topics for him/her to write about. Remember to keep the topics or ideas interesting for your child. Use topics such as, “When was the first time you were surprised?” “Describe your favorite sport.” “Tell about your last birthday.” Remind you child to write about the particular topic that is given for that day. Allow your child to give ideas for writing topics as well.

(4)

Another idea to help your child stay on topic is to encourage your child to write a letter to a relative or friend discussing on important topic during the letter (a day at the beach, a trip to the zoo, a night camping in the woods, etc.). As your child finishes the letter, have him/her read the letter aloud. Listen as the details are read and help your child take out information that does not belong. Ask your child: “What is the topic you are writing about?” “Does that belong with that topic?” Help your child see information that does not relate to the topic and have them delete the information.

(5)

Have your child practice staying on topic by having him/her use a main idea chart. This type of chart can be drawn on writing paper or construction paper. A main idea chart can be found at the following website: http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/ela4/h/mainidea.htm. Have your child list the topic he/she would like to write about. Your child can then list details below that are related to the main idea. Review your child’s chart to make sure that the details written relate to the topic that your child has picked.

The trip to the Zoo

__________________________________________. First, we stopped to see the dolphin show. I got wet as the dolphins splashed and played in the tank. Next, we went to see the monkeys. Many of them were eating bananas as they were swinging from the trees. I even saw one make a silly face at me. Finally, I got to see my favorite animal of all; the elephants. Two of the big gray elephants were hosing each other off in the water. As we left the zoo that day, I was already planning my next trip back.
