Learning Tips

(1)

To understand the use of a dictionary, have your child look through one. Remind them that dictionaries are listed in alphabetical order and provide information pertaining to a word’s definition, amount of syllables, part of speech. Each entry may also give an example sentence and a picture.

(2)

Have your child look at the guide words at the top of each page. Let him/her know that the guide words are there to tell the first word on the page and the last word on the page. Have your child think of words and try to find them in the dictionary. Encourage him/her to read the definition of the word once they have found it.

(3)

A thesaurus is a reference book used to find synonyms or words that mean the same. To help your child use a thesaurus, have him/her locate the word that they are looking for. Have him/her read the synonyms for that word. Words are listed in a thesaurus in alphabetical order.

(4)

To understand the use of an encyclopedia, have your child look through one. Like a dictionary and thesaurus, encyclopedias are listed in alphabetical order. Remind your child that instead of one book like a dictionary, an encyclopedia comes in many volumes. Most volumes are labeled with one letter. An encyclopedia gives information about many topics such as, famous people, places, things, and events. Have your child choose a topic of interest. Encourage your child to look up their topic in an encyclopedia and find as much information as possible.

(5)

An atlas is a book of maps that show where different places and landforms are located. Have your child look through a children’s atlas. Encourage him or her to locate the city that they live in. After finding the city, have your child locate their state, country, and continent.
