Titles, tables of contents, glossaries and indexes
Use titles, tables of contents, chapter headings, glossaries, and indexes to locate information in text.
Student is able to use the parts of a text (title cover, table of contents, chapter headings, glossary, and index) to help make finding information easier and faster. Oftentimes the parts of a text can give us a wealth of information and it is important that the student know what information can be found there.
 

Sample Problems

(1)

What is the table of contents used for? The table of contents tells us the name of the chapter and what page it is on.

(2)

What is the chapter heading used for? The chapter heading gives us some clues as to what the chapter will be about.

(3)

What is the glossary used for? The glossary is found in the back of the book and it gives us the definitions of some of the words found in the book.

(4)

What is the index used for? The index is found in the back of the book and it gives us the page numbers for different topics found in the book.

Where can we look in the text to find that information?

Learning Tips

(1)

When reading a new book with your child, always have them look at the book cover and title page. Ask them to read the cover and title page to you.

(2)

Most chapter books and nonfiction texts have a table of contents with chapter headings. Go over this page with your child. Ask them what they think each chapter will be about based on its chapter heading.

(3)

Most nonfiction texts have glossaries. If your child is reading a nonfiction text ask them to locate the glossary. Have them give you the meaning of a couple of words.

(4)

Most nonfiction texts also have indexes. If your child is reading a nonfiction text ask them to locate the index. Have them tell you what information you can find on this page.

(5)

If your child is reading a nonfiction text, talk to them about why these texts are structured differently than fiction texts. Usually nonfiction texts are used for the purpose of researching and its parts make it easier to locate information.
