Learning Tips

(1)

Make additional grammar practice more hands on for your child. Look through magazines and newspapers together and try to find examples of capitalization rules. Have your child highlight the capitalized portion of the sentence and cut out the sentence. Then glue on a piece of construction paper.

(2)

Make additional grammar practice with your child into a game. Give them 10 minutes to come up with as many geographical names, holidays, historical periods, and special events as they can. Have them write on a sheet of paper that is separated into 5 sections and give each section its own category. To make it a little more challenging, do not give them credit for words they did not capitalize.

(3)

If your child constantly forgets the capitalization rules, have them look back at their work. Before you point out their errors, see if they can find and fix their own mistakes.

(4)

After a reading session at home, have your child find examples of capitalization rules in their book. Have them tell you why the author capitalized certain words. (i.e. It’s the name of a geographical location)

(5)

Whenever your child is typing a writing piece, have them print out each draft. Now that many word processing programs have grammar checks, students can visually see when they have a mistake on the screen. However, when they fix the mistake it disappears. It is more effective for students to cross out a mistake and rewrite it so that they can see how many mistakes they have made.
