Meaning of words
Use sentence and word context to find the meaning of unknown words.
Students will use clue words around an unknown word to help them to figure out the meaning of the unknown word. They can also figure out the meaning of unknown words by looking at what is happening in the sentence.

Sample Problems

(1)

Do you know what that word means?

(2)

What are some clue words around the word that could help you figure out what it means?

(3)

What is happening in the sentence or paragraph? Can that help you with figuring out that word?

(4)

What is another word that we could use in place of the word you don’t know that would make sense in the sentence? Could that be the meaning of the word?

(5)

Is the word you don’t know a verb (an action word), a noun (a person, place or thing), or a describing word? Does this help you figure out what the word means?

Learning Tips

(1)

When reading with your child and your child cannot decode a complex word, this is a clue that your child may not know what the word means.

(2)

If you feel your child may not know a word, check to see if there are clues in the sentence that can help your child figure out what the word means on their own.

(3)

If your child is notable to use the clues within the context of the sentence, you can give them clues. For example, if the sentence is The angry boy sulked in his seat. What do you think sulked means if the boy is angry?

(4)

Sometimes a child may be able to decode a word, but this does not mean they know the word’s meaning. If you think the word is too complex, stop your child and ask them to tell you what the word meant.

(5)

If your child constantly needs help with figuring out unknown words, have them stop and circle clue words in the sentence. Guide your child in figuring out the unknown word. Write the words on index cards and write their meanings on the back. This way your child can refer to the index cards if they ever encounter the word again.
