The meaning of words
Use knowledge of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs to determine the meanings of words.
Antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs can give clues as to the meaning of words. A synonym is a word that means the same or almost the same as another word. An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but is spelled differently and has a different meaning. A homograph has the same spelling as another word but is pronounced differently and has different meanings.

(3)

While you are reading with your child, pick out powerful descriptive words an author uses. Discuss with your child why the author chose that word instead of its synonym. For example, the author said the fabric was beautiful. Why didn’t they say the fabric was pretty?

(4)

At the end of a reading session, quiz your child on antonyms. Pick four words from what they just read and ask them to give you some antonym pairs.

(5)

At the end of a reading session, quiz your child on homophone. Pick a couple of homophones from what they just read and ask them to give you a sentence using its homophone. For example, this sentence says he has eight balls. What’s a sentence using its homophone a-t-e?
