Using a dictionary
Use a dictionary to learn the meaning and other features of unknown words.
Student is able to use a dictionary to find the meaning of unknown words. They can also use a dictionary to find parts of speech, pronunciation, and sample sentences. In addition, students should be able to use guide words to make finding words easier.

Learning Tips

(1)

Make sure to have a dictionary in the house that your child can refer to when they need to look up a word while they’re reading and doing homework.

(2)

Make sure to pick a dictionary that is right for your child’s age and grade level. There are picture dictionaries for students who are in the pre-primer level all the way up to adult dictionaries. At the third grade level, average students should be using a children’s dictionary and advanced students may able to use an intermediate dictionary.

If you notice that your child takes a long time when looking up a word, help them use the guide words. The guide words are the words at the top of the page that tell us the first and last word on the page.

If the word you are looking up has more than one meaning, help your student with selecting the best meaning. What meaning would make sense in the sentence?

If your child is looking up a word that they also are not pronouncing properly, have them look at the pronunciation key for help.
