Prefixes and suffixes
Use knowledge of prefixes (e.g., un-, re-, pre-, bi-, mis-, dis-) and suffixes (e.g., -er, -est, -ful) to determine the meaning of words.
The student is able to understand that a prefix or suffix is a part of a word that changes what the word means. The student is also aware that they can figure out the meaning of words by knowing what the prefix (a part of a word that goes at the beginning of the word like re-) or suffix (a part of a word that goes at the end of a word like –ly) means.

Sample Problems

(1)

What is a prefix? A prefix is a part of a word that goes at the beginning of the word like pre-.

(2)

What is a suffix? A suffix is a word that goes at the end of a word like –less.

(3)

(4)

How does that suffix change the meaning of the word?

(5)

How can knowing the meaning of a prefix/suffix help us to know what a word means?

Learning Tips

(1)

Have your child identify everyday items that have names with prefixes or suffixes in them (bicycle, tricycle, uniform). Talk to them about what the prefixes or suffixes might mean just by looking at the items.

(2)

When your child gets stuck decoding a word with a prefix or suffix, point out to them that the word has a prefix and suffix. Talk to them about other words that have the same prefix and suffix and how it’s important to remember these prefixes and suffixes because they will appear in a lot of words.

(3)

If there is a particular prefix or suffix that your child consistently gets stuck on, have them make a visual to show all the words that contain that prefix or suffix. For example, on the top of a large piece of paper write a prefix like mis- and have the child list underneath all the words with that prefix: misunderstand, misplace, misuse, etc. Post in a place where child can refer to when reading.

(4)

Play sorting games with your child using prefixes or suffixes that your child is just mastering. Give them 2-4 prefixes and/or suffixes to focus on. Give them a time limit think of (or find in a book) as many words as they can with that prefix or suffix.

(5)

If your child ask you what a word with a prefix or suffix means, point out to them that the word has a prefix or suffix in it. Ask them if this helps them define the word. If they still need help, tell them what the prefix and suffix means and then clarify the meaning of the word.
