Reading complex words
Know and use complex word families when reading (e.g., -ight) to decode unfamiliar words
When figuring out unknown words, students will need to use strategies such as their knowledge of word families to help them decode. Word families help students to read because once they know one word it will help them read many words with the same ending and/or beginning.

Sample Problems

(1)

How can we use words we know to figure out words we don’t know? For example, if we know the word grape then we know the word drape.

(2)

What word do you know that has the same ending as that word? The ending in shout is the same as the ending in about.

(3)

Can we change the beginning sound in that word to make a new word? Matter can become batter by changing the m- into b-.

(4)

Does that word rhyme with a word you know? Sight rhymes with flight so if we know how to read one word, we can also read the other.

(5)

What word family does that word belong to? Mingle, shingle, single and tingle belongs to the –ingle family.

Learning Tips

(1)

When your child gets stuck on a word, instead of reading the word for them ask them what word looks like that word.

(2)

Also, ask is there a word you know that you think might rhyme with that word.

(3)

At the end of a reading session with your child, ask your child to sort words with commonalities.

(4)

If your child seems to always get stuck on the same word family, have them highlight the words in the reading material (make sure book belongs to you). This way they can look back at words with the same family that they previously had trouble with to help them.

(5)

As your child is mastering certain word families, have them make visuals and post them somewhere in the home where the child can refer to them when reading. For example, write –ight at the top of a large paper and have child list all words in that family underneath it. Post on a wall next to child’s desk.
