Sample Problems

(1)

(2)

Can you find the syllable breaks in the word to make it easier to read?

(3)

What is a closed syllable?

(4)

(5)

Learning Tips

(1)

When your child gets stuck on a multisyllabic word, help them sound out each syllable and then have them restate the word by blending the syllables.

(2)

If your child needs additional support with a multisyllabic word, read it to them and then have them segment the word by clapping out the syllables. Ask them how many syllables they clapped.

(3)

If there is a word that the child consistently gets stuck on, have them write it on an index card. Then have them segment the syllables using a different color ink. Post next to a spot where child reads so they can refer to as necessary.

(4)

If there are many multisyllabic words child gets stuck on, use the index cards mentioned above to quiz child. For a new word start off easy and you say the word and have the child pick the correct card. Make it harder by you picking the card and having the child read it to you.

(5)

You can also review index cards by having your child clap out syllables to words and telling you how many syllables are in each word.
